The Week of Movie Funny Scenes
There are a lot of factors that go into making a memorable movie death scene. Some deaths stay with us because of how shocking or unexpected they are. Gory deaths can also stick in people's minds as do very tragic deaths. Then there are those rare death scenes that are memorable for how funny they are.
There are plenty of movies that have succeeded in delivering unintentionally funny death scenes, but it is a real skill to purposely make an audience laugh while also killing off a character. If you're in the mood for a bit of dark humor, check out some of the most hilarious movie death scenes.
10 Weezy Joe - Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
While Intolerable Cruelty might not be one of the Coen Brothers' most popular films, it is not a total loss. The screwball comedy set in the high stakes world of divorce lawyers has some funny moments, most of them coming from the asthmatic hitman Weezy Joe.
Miles Massey (George Clooney) attempts to stop Weezy Joe from killing his wife. A fight ensues and Joe mixes up his inhaler and his gun. He ends up spraying Miles in the face with the inhaler before putting the gun in his own mouth and pulling the trigger. It's the kind of comedic mix-up only the Coens could pull off so well.
9 Chubbs - Happy Gilmore (1996)
When failed hockey player Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) discovers he has a talent for golf, he is mentored by a former pro golfer named Chubbs Peterson (Carl Weathers) who had to quit the game after having his hand bitten off by an alligator.
While playing a match, Happy comes face to face with the alligator who took Chubbs' hand and ends up fighting it. As a thank you to Chubbs, Happy gifts him the alligator's head, but the sight of it scares Chubbs so much he falls out a window to his death.
8 White Boy Bob - Out Of Sight (1998)
The crime masterpiece Out of Sight stars George Clooney as a bank robber named Jack Foley who escapes from prison. He is eventually roped into a home robbery by another group of criminals, though Foley has his own plans of taking the loot for himself.
As he is planning his getaway, Foley is cornered by a particularly dumb member of the crew named White Boy Bob. After making Foley drop his gun, Bob begins walking up the stairs towards him but ends up slipping and shooting himself in the head. Foley's confused reaction makes the shocking moment so much funnier.
7 Marvin - Pulp Fiction (1994)
Quentin Tarantino's classic Pulp Fiction is filled with gruesome violence but also a lot of dark humor. No scene better exemplifies the mixing of these two elements than the death of poor Marvin.
Marvin is an inside man who helps Jules and Vincent retrieve something stolen from their boss. Following the job, the three are driving through Los Angeles. Vincent turns around to talk to Marvin in the backseat when his gun goes off and splatters Marvin's brains all over the car.
6 Derek's Friends - Zoolander (2001)
While Derek Zoolander might be the dumbest male model in the world, his friends aren't much smarter. After getting humiliated on national television, Derek's friends decide to take him out for some Orange Mocha Frappuccinos.
After cruising around town, enjoying their beverages, the friends stop for gas. Their fun times lead to them getting in a playful gasoline fight. Then one of them lights a cigarette and Derek watches his dumb friends get blown sky-high.
5 Bill Murray - Zombieland (2009)
One of the greatest movie cameos of all time comes from Bill Murray's surprise appearance in Zombieland. The heroes decide to hideout in Hollywood style and choose Murray's mansion as their new home. They soon find Murray is still alive and posing as a zombie.
After getting to know most of the group, Murray decides to pull a prank on Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) with a mock zombie attack. Unfortunately, Murray is too good of an actor and Columbus shoots him. As he dies, they ask him if he has any regrets to which he replies, "Garfield maybe."
4 Gennaro - Jurassic Park (1993)
Steven Spielberg's classic adventure film Jurassic Park is not a comedy by any stretch of the imagination, but it is clear the director saw the humor in the film's most famous death scene.
As a storm ravages the park, the T-Rex escapes from its enclosure. The slimy lawyer Gennaro abandons the kids he is with and hides out in the outhouse. That ends up being a poor hiding spot as the T-Rex smashes it down. Gennaro and the dinosaur look at one another for a moment before the T-Rex snatches the lawyer off the toilet.
3 The Swordsman - Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)
The behind-the-scenes stories of how this moment in Raiders of the Lost Ark came to be is the stuff of Hollywood legend. One the day they were meant to start filming an epic fight between Indiana Jones and a swordsman, Harrison Ford was feeling very under the weather.
As they ran through the choreography, Ford suggested that Jones simply shoot the man. It might not be the most heroic act, but it is a moment that helped Indiana Jones become an action movie icon.
2 Danson And Highsmith - The Other Guys (2010)
In the hilarious cop comedy The Other Guys, we are introduced to the two top cops in the city, Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson). These two are stereotypical badass action cops who cause more damage than they prevent.
In the first act of the movie, the two super cops are pursuing bad guys on the roofs above the city. When the bad guys repel down to the street, the two cops decide to follow them down and "aim for the bushes." They leap from the building and make the long fall down to their deaths.
1 Chad - Burn After Reading (2008)
The Coen Brothers comedy Burn After Reading features an all-star cast but the funniest performance is from Brad Pitt as Chad, a simple yet well-meaning gym employee. When trying to help out his friend, Chad agrees to sneak into a CIA officer's apartment to steal classified emails.
Unfortunately, Chad finds himself in the bedroom of a government agent (George Clooney). When the agent opens his closet and finds Chad hiding in there with an apologetic smile, the agent instinctively shoots Chad in the face. It is a hilariously shocking early exit for Pitt.
